so i brewed my india red ale today and...
brewed the india red ale today and gave it a quick taste..should be really really good as long as it ferments well
but problem i had..the target gravity was 1067 and ended up being 1080...cant figure out why...did the recipe and ran it through beer tools and the beer thing on my Iphone and both said 1067 but ended up being way over..any thoughts?
hmm...not even sure what that is lol..but if its the box i think it is...75%
hmm...no other thoughts? its allready about ready to toss in the 2ndary (gonna check the grav. in the morning) and toss in my 1.5oz of kent for dry hopping....just dont understand why it was reading so high when 2 programs both said should be at 1067.
What was your volume when you took the reading? If the volume was less than the volume that the program was assuming you would have it would give you a higher gravity reading.
If could be settings in the software that need to be adjusted. I noticed that the original recipe had a higher gravity than the one that you actually brewed. Even though you reduced the amount of extract you added pure sugar. Send me the export beersmith file and I will look at it and see if I see anything that could have been off.
When I put in your recipe for a 5 gallon batch. I get 1073 for your recipe that you posted in the original post. Your original post did not mention the batch size you were brewing.
Did you change anything from the recipe?
did my 2nd batch there on page 2...7lb of dme, .5lb light brown sugar and about 1.5 lbs of grains steeped. and measured it at 5gallons..went up to 5.5 just to drop a bit of the gravity and cuz when in tranfer to 2ndary then to bottle bucket i usually lose a total of .5gallons..so i usually do a 5.5gallon batch.
i boil 4 gallon then top off to 5 to check reading (and every batch i have ever brewed has read high)...this time the temp was 68 when i checked to also.
its not a big deal..i tasted it and it tasted fantastic...gonna hydro it tomorrow and transfer to 2ndary for dry hopping. should come out great (i hope)...never have used that irish yeast before.

gave it a taste today..gravity down to 1020...probably spot on for a 1080 OG, bit hoppier than i expected and not as much roast flavor as i was looking for. since it seems plenty hoppy and has a good aroma now..may just let it finish in primary and go directly to bottles in a week or so.
20 from 80 sounds great! No worries there. Sounds great, and can't wait to taste some.
yeah..disapointed about the roasty flavor that was supposed to be there using the roasted barely..but maybe once its all settled and bottled it will be there a bit.

What was the efficiency setting in beersmith?
